Error code 0x80040116

When trying to click 'Settings' on a PST file in Outlook 2007 (File > Data File Management) I kept getting an error code 0x80040116.

I get an error code 0x80040116 when trying to click on Outlook PST file setting option. I had problem with both main folders PST as well as Archive PST file i.e. for removing archive folder issue I just click right on Archive folder and select close archive folder. After that go to file > data file management and click ‘Add’ to add Archive .pst file. You can use this processor for other PST files too. But not for main personal folder Outlook.pst files because it don’t close during an error 0x80040116.

For Personal folder PST file you have to follow the following procedure.
  • Click on file > Data file management then Click on Open folder where Outlook data files are stored. Keep Explorer window open.
  • Exit from Outlook
  • On opened Explorer window you seen an Outlook.pst file it a main personal folder PST file
  • Now copy and paste this Outlook.pst file to other folder and be sure that you have a backup. The process take a long time if you a large PST so be patience
  • Now Open Outlook PST files and deletes all the folders lies under a Personal Folders.
  • Now empty deleted items by clicking Tools and then Empty Deleted Items folders
  • Next open copy Outlook.pst file by going File > Data file management and then Click add.
  • Outlook will now open a Personal folder which would have all emails and other stuff as you had in the personal folders.
  • Now just drag and drop emails back into mail personal folder
  • Once this dragging and dropping process get completed click on the right and Close personal folder
  • You can now go to File > Data File Management and click 'Settings' on your Personal Folders and see the Settings dialog.
During Processing all this procedure is careful as it can harm your Outlook database. I am assuming that you don’t connect with an MS Exchange from your Outlook. If you do then mentioned procedure does not work for you.

And If the above procedure doesn't work for you then Try an third party utility as it helps in resolving all error issues of Outlook and get back your Outlook PST file in a healthy file format. for more detail follow link: http://www.outlookpstrecovery.org/

Outlook Error 80040834

If your file size is around 2GB in size and you are having trouble in opening an Outlook PST file then most probably you are hitting old legacy limit.

As Outlook older version had set this limit due to constraints based around FAT file system used at a time. It seen that some Outlook related tool still have this limit. Know the point is that due to such limitation it appears that Outlook PST file is unable to open as it get corrupted.

The question: Is at that instant you can use scanpst.exe (inbox repair tool) to repair it? The answer: was no as it seen that the PST file around 25 MB is over the handling limit of scanpst.exe. The last error in log file to signify this is “80040834″

Now for resolving this problem or compacting the PST file size MS have released a tool which makes size of PST file compatible with scanpst.exe the only drawback of this tool is that it basically deletes 25MB of mailbox to shrink its size.

Yes scanpst.exe from Microsoft can’t read mailbox created by Outlook without deliberately deleting the valuable data. So just make sure if you are generate .pst the size should be under 2GB.

Fix Outlook Errors

Some common solution for resolving Outlook error

Disable virus scanner integration.

Sometime a virus Scanner Integration can also cause problem in sending/receiving emails. For instant following time out issues are often a result of this:
  • Operation timed out waiting for a response from receiving (POP) server
  • Time out occurred while communicating with server
Other issues that often caused by having virus scanner integrated with Outlook are:
  • Outlook being slow in collecting mails
  • Message ending up stuck in Outlook
  • Message being sent but not received
  • Receiving or sending blank messages
  • General message corruption
Disabling virus scanner integration with Outlook not compromise security of your database as you still sufficiently protected by on-scanner part of virus scanner.

Check your firewall setting

Firewall can block outgoing and incoming traffic so make sure that Outlook or required port for email listed an exception to go through.
If receive/send errors occur after updating your Outlook, than probably you need to reconfigure firewall to re-allow Outlook to pass through again. This is because various firewall solutions verify via hash that it is indeed correct outlook.exe that is trying to pass through firewall and not some virus named itself outlook.exe. Since outlook.exe gets updated with some updates as well, you will need to accept it as safe again. For more info try the manual of firewall solution.

Issues with add-ins

Integrating new add-ins with Outlook can also cause problem in sending and receiving process. To further troubleshoot such add-in manually disables each of them and re- enable each of them one by one to find problematic one.

Check email account setting

If after configuring an account you get a receive/send error, then you should start with verifying your account setting is correct or not, you get this detail from email administrator or ISP.
When you try to send message from another network than network were mailbox is located is need to be enable authentication for configured SMTP server as well.
If Outlook suddenly start showing an receive/send errors, than still it’s a good practice to recheck or verify your account setting and make sure that they are current.
Trying account setting of yours on another computer or creating an additional mail profile for testing could help in determining if it is an issue with current setting of configured account.

Check data store integrity

If there are problem with deliver location then this could conclude in receive/send issues. You can check the integrity of delivery location with the help of scanpst.exe. In some claim you need to run pst2gb tool when data store is full.

Stuck message or hidden read receipt

Stuck message also cause problem in receiving and sending mails. While it is simple to spot stuck message in Outlook, in some cases stuck message can be read receipt which are hidden messages and much harder to recognize the issue and too delete.

And if after following all the above methods the Outlook Error don’t get fix and database get corrupted than switch to a effective solution like Outlook PST Recovery
